Waxing is the most preferred and effective method of
temporary hair removal. Basically there are 2 types of waxing: Cold Waxing and
Hot Waxing.
The wax used for both hot waxing and cold waxing is
essentially made up of the same ingredients: wax base (paraffin or beeswax),
resin and lubricator.
The major difference between cold wax and hot wax is the
temperature. Wax is melted before being
used in ‘hot waxing’. This melted wax is
applied to the skin and a small piece of cloth is pressed on the wax. The piece
of cloth is then pulled in the opposite direction of the hair growth, removing
the hair from its root.
In the case of the cold waxing technique, wax is already
applied on the pulling strips. The wax on the pulling strips is in a semi-solid
phase and it continues to remain in that phase throughout the process. The cold
wax strips are applied to the skin and pressed down in the direction of hair
growth. Then quickly the strips are pulled in the opposite direction.
In my opinion, the hot waxing method is superior because the
wax adheres better to hairs. In terms of cleanliness, cold waxing methods is a
little less messy as compared to hot waxing.
However, if an experienced waxing technician is performing the service,
‘cleanliness’ should never be an issue.
Some people say that cold waxing is less painful, but the
strips usually need to be reapplied and pulled several times. This can result in red bumps, ingrown hairs
or irritation.
If you are attempting to wax yourself, be extremely careful
using hot wax. You can seriously burn
your skin if you over-heat your wax. If
your wax looks very fluid, it has probably been heated too much. The wax should be a little viscous, not water
like. Also, avoid waxing on infected,
irritated and sunburned skin. After waxing, wait at least 24 hours before
exposing skin to the sun, hot tubs, perfumes, swimming pools and lotions.
