Energy Conservation

1. Conduct regular maintenance on heating, ventilation and air
conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration systems at least twice a year.

2. Save energy in 7 ways, including required installation/use of
more energy-efficient light fixtures, task lights, and exit lights.

Pollution Prevention

1. Conduct an annual assessment of your facility to identify ways to prevent pollution.

2. Check labels for cleaning products, building maintenance and other materials and seek safer alternatives.

3. Properly store and recycle or dispose of all hazardous wastes.

4. Implement pollution prevention measures:

* Implement 7 measures in and around the facility, including required measures such as:

o Ensure only rain enters the storm drain.

o Keep dumpsters covered.

o Direct water from outdoor washing of mats and vehicles to sanitary sewer.

o Hire BASMAA-certified cleaners for washing outdoor areas.

* Reduce chemicals used in 8 ways, including required measures such as:

o Use low-toxic cleaning products such as those that meet Green Seal certification standards.

o Replace aerosols with pump dispensers, if available.

o Eliminate products that contain anti-bacterial agents such as Triclosan.

o Reduce or eliminate use of pesticides by implementing Integrated Pest Management.

* Reuse or recycle all "Universal Wastes" (fluorescent tubes and
bulbs; batteries; electronics), plus two additional potential
pollutants.

* Join the Spare The Air program (www.sparetheair.org) and
implement 2 additional measures to reduce vehicle emissions.

Green America hosts The Green Business Conference in both Chicago and
San Francisco. The conference functions as both an informational and a
networking event. Those who are already “green” or have a desire to be
sustainable have the opportunity to learn and teach what they know.
Green America, along with Global Exchange, have hosted the Green
Festival for the past three years. The Green Festival is an event
geared towards uniting green businesses, leading thinkers of the green
movement, and thousands of concerned citizens hoping to reduce their
environmental footprint. The festival includes exhibitions of green
products, green workshops, expert speeches, and other forms of
entertainment. Festivals are currently organized in Seattle, Denver,
Chicago, Washington, and San Francisco.

1. Monitor water bills for sudden rises in use, and contact your water company should this occur.

2. Regularly check for, report, and repair leaks.

3. Install low-flow faucet aerators and showerheads.

4. Use dry methods for outdoor cleanup.

5. Install toilets that use 1.6 gallons per flush or less.

6. Implement 2 additional recommended water conservation measures.

* Reduce waste in 7 different ways, including eliminating use of
individual water bottles and Styrofoam, and setting printers and
copiers to duplex.

* Reuse materials in 3 ways.

* Provide containers at convenient locations and recycle
cardboard, newspapers, office/mixed papers, glass, metal, plastics and
1 additional material.

* Purchase paper with at least 30% and paper towels with at least
35% post - consumer content and at least 2 other recycled-content
products.

sell their products to businesses who want to transition green. Talk
with like-minded individuals who care for the environment and want to
help preserve it by getting a green job. The time is now.The American
auto industry is adding jobs as the transition to using green
technologies takes shape. Daily jobs report is saying that automakers
are adding jobs to support the integration of green technologies into
the marketplace – specifically battery technology for electric powered
cars. These jobs will be added gradually over a longer period of time,
so the jobs data will increase as time goes by. Green auto jobs have,
in part, been created with Department of Energy loans. Plants are
shifting to becoming more green so new workers are needed. A gradual
expansion is being forcasted as these new types of plants increase in
size. People who were laid-off over one year ago are getting their jobs
back, as well as new hires are being added as shifts are added to
existing plants.
