Who Should Buy This Vehicle?

Older drivers who are looking for a budget Buick (and the subsequent soft ride, loose steering, cushy seats and wood trim). Everyone else should take a long look elsewhere.

The automatic offers three modes: Comfort, Sport and Manual. In Comfort, it starts out in 2nd gear (which makes for a gentler step-off) and changes gears sooner than when in Sport mode. Those two actions also optimize fuel economy and grip on slippery roads. Sport mode was our choice, as it starts out in 1st gear, which provides snappier response off the line; shifts at higher rpm; and also downshifts more eagerly. In essence, it keeps the E550 "up on its toes," ready to blow past cell phone-focused dawdlers going below the speed limit in the passing lane. Less satisfying was Manual mode, which is enacted by flicking the console's shift lever left and right to change gears. Typical of most automanuals, it downshifts promptly when the lever is flicked, but upshifts are slow on the, well, uptake.

In back, the reclining outboard seats are nicely shaped and offer satisfactory legroom, but headroom was tight on our tester because of the otherwise enjoyable dual-pane "Vista Roof" option. Furthermore, the middle seat is for short trips only due to the slablike seatback, which doubles as a fold-down armrest when the seat isn't in use. In the scheme of things, though, these are minor complaints, and the Edge's comfortable seating and compliant ride make it one of the more capable crossovers on the market for people-hauling purposes.

Comfort

The seats are upholstered in a space-age blue material with black mesh accents, conjuring up images of a ride at Epcot Center. Seat comfort is satisfactory, but there are only two seats in back rather than the usual three. Leg- and headroom are ample all around.
