Our Integrated Pest Management program relies on predatory insects to
reduce pests, with weekly applications of various beneficial insects
and bacteria, such as beneficial spider mites to treat pest spider
mites and whitefly, beneficial nematodes for control of insects,
beneficial fungi or bacteria for the control of various diseases and
insects and beneficial wasps to control aphids and red scale.
One key focus of our new plant introductions is to find plants with
a high degree of natural pest and disease resistance, thereby reducing
the need for pesticide application both at our nursery and in the home
landscape.
Rain barrels offer an inexpensive and virtually effortless way
to capture mineral- and chlorine-free water for watering your garden or
lawn. By harnessing this resource from nature, you’ll not only notice a
significant decrease in your water bill, you'll also see a reduction in
stormwater runoff, which will help prevent flooding and erosion.
Great for the East
The USDA map does a fine job of delineating the garden climates of
the eastern half of North America. That area is comparatively flat, so
mapping is mostly a matter of drawing lines approximately parallel to
the Gulf Coast every 120 miles of so as you move north. The lines tilt
northeast as they approach the Eastern Seaboard. They also demarcate
the special climates formed by the Great Lakes and by the Appalachian
mountain ranges.
We are keenly aware of the problem of invasive plants and we do not
sell plants in a region if they are considered invasive. Some varieties
we have stopped growing entirely because they became invasive in more
and more regions. And before we introduce a new plant variety, it is
scrutinized for potential invasiveness.

A Zen garden is a place to clear the mind and calm the soul. Inspired
by ancient Asian garden traditions that value harmony and reverence for
nature, a Zen garden is the perfect antidote to the stress and
complications of modern living. This kind of garden is often
characterized by small conifers and trees accented by tranquil water
features. Ornamental grasses, bamboo and stone are common. Flowers,
however play a limited role since most garden elements are chosen for
year-round visual appeal.
Light pruning for health (cont.)
* Remove any part of the plant that looks diseased before it can spread.
* Remove dead twigs and branches so these don’t become pest entry points.
* Resolve conflicting branches by removing the smaller one because friction creates wounds and these invite problems.
* Trim off whip-like sucker growth originating at the base of the
trunk so it doesn’t ‘suck’ growth energy from the rest of the tree.
* Do not prune later in the summer. Allow shoots to mature and prune again in winter.

There are hundreds of different types of algae, but they can basically
be classified as either green water algae, or string algae. Our goal in
teaching you to maintain your water garden is to limit the algae growth
and keep it at a highly manageable, optimal level. Some algae will
always be there (a little on the rocks and gravel is great!), but we
like to do away with the string algae once the Koi have had an
opportunity to nibble a bit.
