The business leader of the future really will have to take a lesson from the 5-second MBA. It's no longer profitable or efficient to lead by command only. Successful managers know they need to probe their teams and motivate them by asking questions (as the left side of this handy Gruzzle indicates). Check out CO2 Partners' Gary Cohen's new book JUST ASK LEADERSHIP for some more tips on asking vs. telling in business.

Another great summary illustration from GLHoffman. Applying these very principles as Executive Director of City Harvest, I led the team to increase the number of people we fed every week by 900% in just over 10 years. Doing these three things created excellent relationships. And since 93% of business is based in human behavior and relationships, we could easily handle the 7% that is business processes and statistics. Parenthetically, these three principles saved a couple of marriages, too. Especially saying "and" more than "but."
